Having been listed as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) in the European Union, its use now requires authorization under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals). This classification marked a turning point in the plating industry, which has accelerated the search for alternative plating processes that do not contain hexavalent chromium compounds like chromium trioxide. While Cr(VI)-free chromium processes have been established as viable substitutes in the market for some time due to the additional properties they bring - broader color spectrum and increased corrosion resistance - the introduction of a Cr(VI)-free etching process for plastics has remained a challenge for chemical suppliers for many years.
